STRESS is a major issue faced by many in the workplace and it is a common trend for people in management to overlook the root causes of stress, which can greatly reduce the efficiency levels of staff.
A community psychologist from the Ministry of Health (MoH), based at the Health Promotion Centre, Nur Liyana bte Hj Mohd Noor, discussed this topic in her lecture at the ministry’s Al ’Afiah Hall yesterday.
The talk which was entitled ‘Overcoming Stress Wisely at the Workplace’ was attended by staff from several government departments.
In many cases, the sources of stress at the workplace can be attributed to factors such as unequal baseline salaries among staff occupying the same positions in an office, long working hours, lack of support as well as too many changes being implemented within a relatively short period of time just to mention a few, Nur Liyana highlighted.
Fortunately, there are intelligent ways to overcoming stress at the workplace, she said, that can reduce stress levels and consequently alleviate the suffering of the affected staff.
Sub-issues such as planning ahead, maintaining a balanced diet and exercising regularly can reduce stress.
The lecture is an important component in a series of health talks organised as part of the national campaign to fight non-communicable diseases.
