THE STUDENTS of Hospitality Depart-ment of Maktab Teknik Sultan Saiful Rijal (MTSSR), who are currently undergoing the Skill Certificate 3 Apprenticeship course, is currently hosting an entrepreneurial week at the department’s Longhouse Café.
The Café is being used by the students to learn and practise professional cookery and services.
The entrepreneurial week, which began on October 27, and will end on November 1 is being led by experts in restaurant service and production kitchen, displaying their culinary delights.
The event is based on a number of themes, one of them being ‘Felini’s Ristorante Italiano’ that features popular Italian dishes like fettuccini carbonara, pepperoni pizza and vegetarian lasagna.
Today’s theme, ‘Mexican Fiesta’ show-casing Mexican cuisine, was planned and prepared by students under supervision of expert instructors.
Today’s menu includes Beef Nachos, Chicken Fajitas, and Vegetarian Burritos with a new drink prepared by students – Watermelon Agua Fresca.
The café resembles a real-work environment for students where they also have to demonstrate their skills in leadership, communication, marketing and management.
The Skill Certificate 3 Apprenticeship in Professional Cookery and Services is a two-year programme consisting of ‘institute-based’ training that focuses on learning theoretical aspects of the hospitality industry, as well as on-the-job training where students are attached to various industries to practise their acquired skills.
The Hospitality Department of Maktab Teknik Sultan Saiful Rijal also offers other programmes such as Skill Certificate 2 and 3 in Food and Beverage Production and Services, Skill Certificate 2 Apprenticeship in Professional Cookery and Services, as well as Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management. The programme provides skills, knowledge and other necessary competencies required to develop students into highly-skilled job-ready professionals.
