MS SAYANG, a community outreach programme established in 2012 by Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS), aims to produce charismatic, disciplined and ambitious youth.
The programme hopes to nurture youths who wish to pursue challenging and worthwhile activities, gain experience and work towards a better tomorrow. Pre-university students who expressed interest in the programme were screened.
These students were required to be high achieving and mature to be allowed to participate.
Those selected were to act as mentors to primary students, guiding them in their academic pursuits and inspiring them to achieve 5 As in PSR.
The programme allows the pre-university students from MSPSBS to mentor Year Six students from primary schools located in Kg Ayer.
During the sessions conducted on Friday between 9am and 11am, the mentors teach PSR subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science.
Each mentor is assigned to one or two students who remain with them throughout the mentor’s involvement with the programme.
The mentor has the responsibility to teach and motivate their students by constantly keeping in touch with them and monitoring their progress as well as providing them support.
This year, MS Sayang included Year 7 students from MSPSBS.
For students of this year group, pre-university mentors were required to be well versed in SPN-21 syllabus for Mathematics, Science or Malay.
This arrangement provides senior year students a chance to bond with their juniors, sharing insight and experience with them while motivating them to achieve more.
The programme currently includes 60 mentors who cater to 80 students.
Through this project, MSPSBS aims to be more than an academic institution by being active in community work by allowing Pre-University students to build a close relationship with other students. It also encourages the development and maintenance of good values and a strong sense of volunteerism within students, leading to the development and growth of future leaders.
