THE Brunei River will once again become the centre of attention for the Traditional Boat and Speed Boat Race Festival this Sunday (January 25, 8am).
Organised by the Mukim Kota Batu Consultative Council (MPM Kota Batu) in collaboration with the Brunei-Muara District Office, the festival will take place at the Dermaga Diraja.
The best teams from the festival will be chosen to compete in the Brunei Regatta this upcoming March.
In an interview with the Bulletin during a meeting on the festival, Ihsan Sabri bin Abd Manap, the Administrative Officer at the Brunei-Muara District Office said, “Last year, we hosted a similar event at the Damuan area and received a very good response. This year, we decided to change the venue to the Dermaga Diraja to accommodate the increasing number of people attending the event.”
He added that a mini ‘One Village, One Product’ expo – including those from other districts – will be held alongside the festival.
The categories contested at the festival include the District Boat Race for 10, 15 and 20 rollers; the Invited and Mukim Boat Race for 10, 15, 20 and 25 rollers; the Private Company Boat Race for 10, 15, 20 and 25 rollers; and the 25-Roller Open Marathon Boat Race.
The Traditional Boat Race will start from Ujong Tamoi Village while the Marathon Boat Race will start from Sungai Damuan. Both races will conclude at the Dermaga Diraja. Meanwhile, the Speed Boat Race will be carried out in front of the Dermaga Diraja.
