FOUR contestants (Qari and Qariah) competed in the final round of the Ministry of Education Al-Quran Reading Competition, held in conjunction with the 24th Teacher’s Day celebration and the commemoration of 100 Years of Formal Education in Brunei Darussalam.
The departments and institutions under the Ministry of Education and representatives from the academic institutions under the Ministry of Religious Affairs participated in the competition.
The guest of honour was Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awang Abu Bakar bin Hj Apong, Minister of the Education.
Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Yusoff bin Hj Ismail, Deputy Minister of Education, as well as permanent secretaries, deputy permanent secretaries, directors and senior officials at the Ministry of Education were also present during the competition.
Awang Muhammad bin Ali, Champion of the 15th International Al-Quran Reading Competition in Moscow, Russia, initiated the event.
The event this year was coordinated by Institute of Brunei Technical Education and Tertiary Education Division, Ministry of Education. This is an annual event of the ministry organised in conjunction with Teacher’s Day celebration. The event aims to support the titah of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to make the country as a Zikir Nation.
The competition is also a platform for giving encouragement to improving the quality of Al-Quran reading among the ministry of education staff and officers and strengthen relations among them through such a religious activity.
In the male category Awang Shaifulbahri bin Hj Ahmad emerged winner while the female category was won by Dyg Hajah Hananni binti Hj Abdul Halim.
