Tegucigalpa (dpa) – The bodies of Miss Honduras and her sister were found Wednesday, six days after they went missing, police said. Maria Jose Alvarado Munoz, 19, who was set to travel Wednesday to the Miss World pageant in London, and her older sister Sofia Trinidad had gone missing Thursday.
The sisters were killed at a recreational area near the western Honduran town of Santa Barbara and their bodies were taken to the Cablotales community in the municipality of La Arada, about 300 kilometres north-west of the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, said Leandro Osorio, head of the Honduran Police’s criminal investigation unit.
Sofia Trinidad’s boyfriend is the main suspect in the case, Osorio said. A car and a firearm linked to the crime were allegedly seized from the man.
The boyfriend and an alleged accomplice were arrested Tuesday.
The bodies had been buried for several days and were largely decomposed when they were found, Osorio said.
The two women had gone missing after attending the main suspect’s birthday party.
The motive of the killings was not immediately clear.
Honduras had 90.4 homicides per 100,000 people in 2012 and is the world’s most dangerous country outside war zones, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
Miss Honduras was set to have taken part in the Miss World pageant on December 14.
At the beginning of the year, Latin America was shaken by the killing of another beauty queen. Former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear Mootz was shot during a robbery in January.
