THE Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) through its Department of Agriculture and Agrifood yesterday celebrated the Farmers, Livestock Breeders and Fishermen’s Day 2014 at the Dewan Muhibbah of the Brunei–Muara District Office.
The event was held to appreciate local farmers and fishermen for their contribution to the country’s economy and for generating food for the nation.
The Farmers, Livestock Breeders and Fishermen’s Day 2014 is celebrated annually every November 1 and this year marks its fifth year since His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam officially declared the celebration on November 19, 2009, during the opening of the Agriculture and Agrifood Expo.
The guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the event was Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources.
Similar to last year’s theme, this year’s theme – ‘Generate Food, Safe Country’ – is based on the ministry’s priority of generating food in a sustainable manner in order to ensure an adequate supply to meet the needs of the people in the Sultanate.
The event also saw the presentation of various awards by the minister to the winners in the farmers and fisheries categories.
In the farmers category, Awang Haji Md Sofian bin Mohd Yassin received the Successful Padi Entrepreneurs Award while the Viable Farmer’s Award was given to Chin Set Mee. Both winners each received a $4,000 cash prize, a trophy and certificate of appreciation.
In the fisheries category, the Successful Livestock Breeders and Fisherman Award was awarded to Awang Haji Zaini bin Haji Mohd Zain. He received a $5,000 cash prize, a trophy and a certificate of appreciation.
The Viable Fish Farmers and Fisherman Award went to Pengiran Haji Ibrahim bin Pengiran Muda Haji Hashim. He received a $4,000 cash prize, a trophy and a certificate of appreciation.
