BRUNEI History Centre under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) marked another milestone yesterday by launching 14 history books held in commemoration of the Sultanate’s 31st National Day.
The guest of honour to officiate the launching was Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah, who stressed on the importance of preserving history in his speech.
“In the national context, the younger generation needs to acknowledge and learn from the nation’s history, including all the glory, wisdom, mistakes and failures,” he said before proceeding to officiate the book launching.
Eight of the books launched contain materials submitted for the 2014 Brunei History Picture Storybook-Writing Competition – an initiative to encourage publication of history books bearing pictures.
The publication of these books is also aimed at contributing and supporting researchers, writers, students, and local history enthusiasts to produce their own quality history works.
The ceremony also saw the presentation of awards to some 20 participants of the 2014 Brunei History Picture Storybook-Writing Competition.
Best three winners of the competition went home with $2,000, $1,000 and $700 respectively, for having won the judges over with their writings, whist the remaining 17 entrants received consolation prizes of $500 each.
