THE Ministry of Health has alerted the public over three specific slimming products found to be adulterated with undeclared poisons.
Samples of these products were collected through post-market surveillance activities conducted by the Pharmacy Enforcement Section at retail outlets.
The affected products are Lipo 8 Burn Slim capsule and Lipo 9 Burn Slim Detox capsule which are both adulterated with sibutramine, as well as Pi Pa Mi Wan Pill which is adulterated with chlorpheniramine.
Sibutramine is a slimming agent and is no longer recommended for medical use for cases of obesity due to its harmful effects on the heart and liver. Its consumption can also cause serious adverse reactions such as high blood pressure, heart palpitations, insomnia and in worst cases, kidney and liver damage.
Chlorpheniramine, an antihistamine agent, under unsupervised consumption can cause dizziness, lowering of blood pressure, irregular hearbeat, confusion, depression and convulsions.
The ministry has not issued any approval for the importation and sale of these products.
Anyone involved in the retailing of these products are reminded that it is an offence under the Poisons Act 1956 and the penalty upon conviction is a fine of $8,000 or six months’ imprisonment.
Furthermore, if a person commits an act that amounts to such a degree of negligence so as to endanger or be likely to endanger human life, then such a person shall be guilty of an offence which carries a penalty of a fine of $16,000 and 12 months’ imprisonment.
The public who have purchased or used these products are advised to stop using them immediately. They should also consult a medical practitioner if they experience any adverse reactions or feel unwell as a result of using these products.
The ministry would also like to call upon the public for their cooperation to report to the Pharmacy Enforcement Section if any of these products are still found in the market.
