PEHIN Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Education, yesterday went on a work visit to the Pengiran Pekerma Setia Di-Raja Sahibul Bandar (PPSDSB) Primary School, Perpindahan Mata-Mata Housing Area, and the Jerudong Primary School.
Also present during the visit was the Deputy Minister of Education, Dato Seri Setia Haji Yusoff bin Haji Ismail.
The minister’s arrival to PPSDSB Primary School was greeted by Cikgu Suhaila binti Haji Abdul Karim, the school’s headmistress. During the visit, the minister listened to a briefing on the school’s profile; as well as reinforcement and support programmes at the school.
In a discussion session, the minister was informed about the practice of autonomy at the school to increase the effectiveness of delivery of core subjects such as mathematics.
He was also told about the school holding extra classes on Fridays for Year 6 students, which received good response from both parents and students.
Regarding this, the minister recommended that the school constantly monitor and assess the effectiveness of any improvement initiatives it carries out.
The discussion also brought the minister’s attention towards student education assistance such as transportation and hostel facilities to aid them in their studies.
The minister then visited Year 6 classrooms, special rooms and lower primary education classes, and interacted with the students to closely observe the learning process as well as their aspirations.
The minister then proceeded to Jerudong Primary School, where he was welcomed by the school’s headmistress, Cikgu Hajah Khadijah binti Haji Gapar. He was then led to a briefing on the school’s profile and programmes.
During the briefing, Cikgu Hajah Khadijah introduced the support programmes focused towards PSR achievements practised by the school, specifically numeracy and literacy intervention programmes.
She added that the school also holds special months for all PSR subjects and encourages good practices among students through the “Children’s Day Event” as well as recycling programmes to improve quality of education and strong relations with the society.
The minister had the opportunity to see the teaching and learning atmosphere for Year 6 students and preschoolers while visiting their classrooms. He also interacted with the teachers and students.
The visits to the two schools highlighted various rooms for improvements that can be implemented by members of the schools.
It also underlined the importance of parents’ involvement in their children’s learning, especially through Parent Teacher Associations.
The visit also identified special areas which schools need to improve on with the support of the Ministry of Education.
With PSR 2015 around the corner, the Ministry of Education is currently active in supporting school leaders by giving autonomy in aspects of curriculum, valuation, teaching and learning resources in order to increase the quality of learning for students. The schools are also encouraged to share resources amongst themselves to optimise each school’s existing resources.
Also present during the visit were the Permanent Secretary (Core Education), Dr Haji Junaidi bin Haji Abdul Rahman; Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education), Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh; Acting Director General of Education, Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus; Acting Director of Schools, Zaman bin Haji Gapar; heads of department and senior officers from the Ministry of Education.
