THE Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, yesterday morning received the ABAC 2014 report from representatives of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Advisory Council (ABAC), which outlined practical recommendations and key initiatives that will be discussed during next month’s APEC Leaders’ Summit in Beijing, China.
The report was handed over by the Chief Executive Officer of BAG Networks, Dayang Haslina Taib and the Director of the LVK Group of Companies, Dayang Hafimi Abdul Haadi.
The recommendations and initiatives within the report cover areas such as regional economic integration, robust investment and finance for infrastructure and connectivity, better platform and vehicles for small, medium and microenterprises, empowering women, addressing urbanisation, food security as well as health and green growth for sustaining the Asia-Pacific as an engine to global prosperity.
In line with this year’s theme of ‘Building Asia Pacific Community: Mapping Long-term Prosperity’, the report carries the collective views and recommendations on specific business sector priorities from businesses’ to APEC economic leaders.
The report contains a letter addressed to the Chair of APEC and President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China, which is endorsed by all ABAC members including Brunei Darussalam, and emphasises key business opportunities and recommendations.
The letter urges APEC economies to take resolute action to pursue trade liberalisation and sustainable economic development through a Free Trade Area for the Asia Pacific (FTAAP) and that the success of its implementation will depend on collaboration between the public and private sectors, the promotion of supply chain connectivity and the liberalisation of cross-border services trade.
