PEHIN Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Education, joined his counterpart from other Southeast Asian countries yesterday for the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Congress at the Amari Watergate Hotel, Bangkok.
According to a press release, the SEAMEO Congress, which convenes once every five years, is a platform for important stakeholders to deliberate and tackle the most pressing education and development issues and priorities inherent in Southeast Asia. The SEAMEO Congress 2014, which carries the theme ‘Southeast Asia in Transition: Re-thinking Education, Science and Culture for Regional Integration’, aims to explore new avenues for managing the diverse changes in education, science and culture and enhance regional understanding and cooperation among educators and different stakeholders in Southeast Asia and beyond.
At the Special Ministerial Session of the SEAMEO Congress, Pehin Dato (Dr) Awg Hj Abu Bakar delivered the keynote address on ‘Challenges and Opportunities for Education Transformation’. The minister talked about the ‘Whole School ICT Development’ (WSID) Project which was designed to achieve continual improvement and sustained adaptive change with the adoption and use of ICT in all schools.
The SEAMEO Congress was attended by over 450 participants comprising regional and international education policy makers, education researchers and practitioners.
Prior to the congress, the Minister of Education attended the launching ceremony of the Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metric (SEA-PLM). The SEA-PLM will be implemented in three phases. Brunei Darussalam is among the six countries taking part in the first phase and will continue to take an active part in the second phase. The third phase of SEA-PLM is scheduled for implementation between February 2016 and March 2017 and will involve all Southeast Asian countries.
The SEA-PLM is a regional approach for system-level monitoring of learner achievement for Southeast Asia. It is an initiative of the SEAMEO with the support of United Nations Children’s Education Fund. SEA-PLM will address issues of common regional concerns to ensure that quality education and learning outcomes are achieved by all children in the early years of primary schooling.
