MINISTER of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar and other dignitaries yesterday attended the opening ceremony of the 11th China-Asean Expo (CAEXPO) and the 11th China-Asean Business & Investment Summit at the Nanning International Convention & Exhibition Centre. Also present at the event were Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR), Hajah Normah Suria Hayati binti Pehin Jawatan Dalam Dato Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama (Dr) Haji Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri and officers from MIPR.
The minister toured the Pavilion of Cities of Charm where Brunei Darussalam showcases Kampung Ayer and mosques. Apart from exhibiting photos, the pavilion also focuses on displaying the latest achievements to promote city-to-city exchanges.
At the pavilion, Soh Kiaw Han, Assistant Head of the Chinese Language Department of the Chung Hwa Middle School in Bandar Seri Begawan is showcasing her skills in Chinese and Jawi calligraphy. At the other corner, there is a woman making handmade baskets.
Bruneian food products are also getting the spotlight at the 11th CAEXPO. The minister visited Ghanim International Food Corporation booths showcasing bruneihalal brand products such as spring roll, samosa, curry puff, mini steam buns, wholemeal roti chapatti and roti puff paratha. The crowd that visited the booth gave thumbs up to the products.
Another popular local booth is Asli-KTM Sdn Bhd is exhibiting BruMee brand. The company manufactures dried and fresh noodles, kway tiaw, wonton noodles and wonton skin sheets.

Asli-KTM Managing Director Haji Rani said the public response toward the products, especially among Chinese customers, are very encouraging. He said the company is Brunei’s largest manufacturer of halal noodle products.
He said, “We are opening an office in Nanning for document declaration in order to distribute our goods in the Chinese market.”
Koh Tek Mong, a company representative, said, “We are here to promote our products and many customers are interested in buying after tasting the products.
“KTM was established in 1982 and today with our new factory, Asli–KTM Sdn Bhd, is one step towards exporting under ‘BruMee’ logo.”
The CAEXPO is not only a platform for China-Asean cooperation but also a trade event open to the whole world. The exhibition promotes the exchanges and cooperation of China and Asean with other economies to enhance the influence of China and Asean globally.
President of Brunei-China Friendship Association, Dr Hj Kamaruddin bin Dato Seri Paduka Hj Talib is encouraging more local SMEs to participate in the CAEXPO and has urged the government to provide subsidies to the participants. He said CAEXPO is an excellent platform to promote local industries including tourism.
Lim Boon Hwa, an association representative, said Brunei has been participating in the CAEXPO since 2004. “Brunei-China Friendship Association is working with the expo secretariat to get Brunei entrepreneurs to join the expo because Brunei is one of the host countries.”
Asked about Bruneian participation this year, he said, “In the first year, the response was encouraging but now it seems to decline and I think the government should do something to move it forward. This year, only four companies are participating.”
