THE Ministry of Communications (MinComm) marked the World Postal Day with a celebration at the ministry’s building in Jalan Menteri Besar, Berakas yesterday.
The World Postal Day is celebrated annually on October 9 to commemorate the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UOU), which was established in 1874.
‘Communication Tools’ was chosen as this year’s theme for the celebration to reflect the vast use of modern hi-tech gadgets such as computer, e-mail and telephone that help the postal services to grow.
The guest of the honour was the Minister of Communications Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar.
The Postmaster General, Awang Haji Mohamad Manan bin Haji Lakim, in an opening speech said since the establishment of postal services years ago, it has brought significant changes to the world, especially in terms of providing services to the public.
The World Postal Day celebration in the Sultanate started off with a Khatam Al-Quran and mass Sunnat Hajat Prayer that were held on October 9. The event was to appreciate the contribution and dedication of the former postmaster generals in the Department of Postal Services.
Yesterday’s event witnessed the launching of the World Postal Day 2014 and presentation of a short video clip on counter services.
It was followed by the presentation of awards for several categories.
Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Suni bin Haji Idris, the former postmaster general, won the ‘Jasamu Dikenang’ Award. He received a trophy, Jong Sarat and an appreciation certificate.
Seri Complex Post Office branch took the Best Post Office Counter Award while the Best Postal Delivery Award was given to Bangar Post Office
The Postmaster at The Mall Gadong Post Office Dayang Hajah Jusnani binti Haji Lamat was the winner of the Best Staff for Division III Award.
The Best Staff for Division IV Award went to Awang Mohd Noor bin Haji Yusof, a clerk (Finance Section) at the Department of Postal Services.
A postman at Kg Mata-Mata Post Office branch Awang Abdul Halid bin Suhaili won the Best Staff for Division V Award.
The first prize winner for the Letter Writing Competition which carried the theme ‘How Music Can Touch Lives’ was Awang Syamil Zuhairi bin Suprem from Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School. Siti Nazurah binti Mohd Ajimy, also from the same school, was the first runner-up while the second runner-up was Ang Woan Shiuan from Chung Hwa Middle School.
The minister also presented souvenirs and certificates of appreciation to the department’s retired officers and staff.
The event concluded with the presentation of the department’s corporate song and the cutting of ‘Pulut Kuning’.
The minister also watched the exhibitions on display at the MinComm’s lobby area.
