RECALLING the good old memories of more than 46 years ago, a reunion ceremony to bring together all the former classmates of BPS 1H (Brunei Preparatory School of 1H) at Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien College (SOASC) back in 1969 was organised yesterday. The reunion event was also held as part of an appreciation ceremony for their class teacher who taught them during the period.
The reunion of Class BPS 1H 1969 was held at the Auditorium Hall, SOASC in the capital. The atmosphere was filled with endless exchange of stories when they met each other after many years as they updated their well-being and shared their excitement and flashed back to their memories back in 1969.
The reunion began with a welcoming remark by Pengiran Haji Bakar bin Pengiran Haji Sulaiman, former class monitor of BPS 1H 1969. On behalf of his former classmates, he extended their appreciation for the contribution, commitment and dedication shown by their class teacher, Cikgu Haji Suhaili bin Haji Umar.
Pengiran Haji Bakar in his speech said, “Without the knowledge and dedication of our teacher, we would not have achieved any success in our lives which even today enable us to venture into various fields.”
“The idea of organising this reunion started when I received text messages via social media (WhatsApp) from a friend, Major (Rtd) Haji Tapa bin Haji Aris. Upon receiving the text, I noticed on the WhatsApp screen BPS 1H as the icon. Later on he added that the same icon name was also used by one of our former classmates on his WhatsApp screen who is also one of the staff members at SOASC. He also told us that he still keeps our old class photo that we took in 1969. From there, we started to thread several text messages about the reunion and put an effort to contact all our former classmates of BPS 1H 1969 and Alhamdulillah we managed to find our classmates, totalling 36 students.
“After all the efforts that we have been through, we finally managed to organise this reunion ceremony together with our class teacher after 46 years of separation. We are happy in seeing our classmates in very good health,” he added.
Pengiran Haji Bakar also said that they are planning to organise another reunion for their 50th anniversary. At the same time, he also advised the younger generation to organise such reunions with their former classmates as it will further strengthen their friendship values.
The ceremony ended with a group photo.
