A LOCAL man was jailed for one year by the Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday for stealing his wife’s gold jewellery to pay his own debts.
Magistrate Azrimah Rahman took a starting point of 18 months’ jail and reduced it by six months for the defendant’s instant guilty plea and other mitigating factors taken into account.
Facts of the case as admitted by 25-year-old Mohammad Syazlan bin Yunus states that the defendant, who is now separated from his wife, was residing with the victim at the time in Kg Mulaut, Jalan Kilanas, sometime in April.
He took her gold jewellery – a gold bracelet, two gold rings, a pair of gold earrings and a gold necklace – which were kept in a drawer in their bedroom.
The defendant sold them off to get money to pay off his debts.
The victim realised her missing jewellery and asked the defendant. He told her that the jewellery was with his mother.
When the defendant did not return the items, the victim lodged a police report.
The defendant and the victim are currently going through divorce proceedings, the court was told.
