A BRUNEIAN man, 29, resorted to theft in order to feed his own family of four and 24 siblings which landed him a six months’ jail sentence after he pleaded guilty to the offence at the Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Khanol Zukria bin Alias said his baby had not had milk for two days and he is the sole breadwinner of his family – his wife and three children.
The defendant stole cables from the warehouse of Shell Transport Logistics, Seria, Kuala Belait worth over $6,000, which would have fetched him only $70 had he sold it.
The defendant used to work on a project that had finished a few days ago at the site under a sub-contractor for Brunei Shell Petroleum and used this to his advantage.
On September 30, the defendant drove to the warehouse and told security personnel on duty he came to sign a time sheet.
The security found out later that the defendant was no longer working at the site and searched for him in the area.
The defendant stole four pieces of M40 Brass Cable Gland, 28 pieces of M63 Brass Cable Gland and two pieces of Copper Rod.
Before the defendant could leave the site, security personnel stopped him and took him to the warehouse supervisor.
The defendant was told to open his bag and when cables were found inside, the police were informed.
Senior Magistrate Haji Nabil Daraina took the defendant’s mitigations into consideration but reminded that he had just made problems worse for his family and his unfortunate status was not a reason to commit the offence.
The defendant’s clear record was also considered in mitigating his sentence.
DPP Dk Nurul’s further application to have the stolen items returned to its owner was granted.
