A 30 YEAR-OLD local man was fined $44,640 or serve 12 months imprisonment in default after he pleaded guilty before the Bandar Magistrate’s Court to possessing smuggled cigarettes.
Jefry bin Haji Ahmad was ambushed by RU ‘C’ police near the jungles of the Brunei-Malaysian border at Kg Junjungan at about 4.07pm on October 4.
Customs prosecuting officer Hj Md Junaidi Hj Ahmad further informed Magistrate Azrimah Rahman that the defendant was seen by the police who were patrolling around the area. The defendant was walking out of a junction towards the edge of the Brunei-Malaysia border where he waited for a few hours.
Two people then emerged from the Malaysian side and were seen handing over three gunny sacks to the defendant in return for $500.
The defendant then placed the gunny sacks in the fields near the junction when the police ambushed the defendant.
