A 35 YEAR-OLD Indonesian man was fined $1,500 or serve four months jail in default after he pleaded guilty before the Bandar magistrate’s court to possession of smuggled cigarettes.
Ahmat Ikhwan was one of the passengers in a bus entering Sungai Tujoh from Miri on January 15.
The defendant did not declare anything but customs inspectors found two cartons and 12 packets of cigarettes.
In another proceeding, a 41 year-old Malaysian Chinese man was fined $1,000 or serve jail for three months in default. The defendant drove his vehicle from Miri on January 16 and did not declare anything to the Customs but an inspection revealed he had brought with him 24 cans of beer and 15 packets of cigarettes.
