AN INDONESIAN man, 38, who faced a charge of possession of an offensive weapon in public was acquitted yesterday following reports that the defendant was of unsound mind during the alleged incident.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Dk Hazirah Pg Yusof applied for the charge against Salim to be withdrawn amounting to an acquittal, which was allowed by Senior Magistrate Muhammed Faisal PD Kefli.
The Mental Health Unit report disclosed that the defendant was of unsound mind at the time of committing the offence and is suffering from schizophrenia.
The defendant is currently under the care and control of the Royal Brunei Police Force and the Indonesian Embassy in Brunei Darussalam pending his deportation from the country. Salim was charged with possession of a machete at about 9.30am on August 2, at the parking lot of the Bismi store in Gadong.
Members of the public were present at the alleged scene where a video was caught on a camera phone which went viral.
