Malaysians fined for smuggling cigarettes

THE Magistrate’s Court recently imposed a $26,600 fine on a 21-year-old Malaysian who pleaded guilty to possessing smuggled cigarettes.

Kiew Jik Soon will have to serve 12 months’ jail in default of payment.

He was found carrying 36 cartons of cigarettes in his vehicle during an inspection by customs preventive officers at the Sungai Tujoh Control Post at 5.30pm on October 6, 2017. Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman presided over the case.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, a 41-year-old Malaysian was handed a $3,400 fine after pleading guilty to possessing smuggled cigarettes.

Sia Siau Ming will have to serve four months jail in default of payment.

Customs preventive officers found the defendant to be carrying 12 cartons of cigarettes in his vehicle upon arrival at the Kuala Lurah Control Post at 6.05am on May 12, 2014.
