A 34-YEAR-old Malaysian man was sentenced to a $35,000 fine, or serve 12 months’ imprisonment in default, after he pleaded guilty at the Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday to possession of smuggled cigarettes.
Low Tze Yen was found to have smuggled in one box and 86 cartons of cigarettes in his car at the Kuala Lurah Control Post on the morning of November 10, Customs Prosecuting Officer Dk Siti Pg Othman informed the court yesterday.
Magistrate Azrimah Rahman gave the defendant 10 months’ grace period to pay the fine, whilst releasing him on bail of $35,000 or in two local sureties.
Low arrived at around 10.35am when Customs officers inspected the defendant’s car after he told them that he had nothing to declare. He defendant admitted he bought the goods from Limbang for $2,400.
