A MALAYSIAN man, 51, was fined $2,000 or serve two month’s jail time in default by the Bandar Magistrate’s Court after he pleaded guilty to smuggling goods in transit through Brunei Darussalam.
Wong Sie Hung was driving a truck belonging to his employing company carrying retail goods arriving from Miri at about 5pm on January 26 at the Sungai Tujoh Control Post.
Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana Haji Abdul Rahman further heard that the defendant had declared only transporting plastic, soft drinks and noodles.
Customs inspectors found that the defendant had carried more in the back of the truck than what he had declared.
There were 97 bottles and 64 packs of body shampoo, 143 bottles of various brands of medicated oil, 18 bottles of cough syrup, 13 boxes of medicated powder, tablets and capsules, seven pieces of ointment, 45 boxes and three packets of medicated plaster, eight cylinders of carbon dioxide gas and 24 bottles of one per cent alcoholic liquid.
The magistrate ordered for the goods returned to its owner and to be declared on the defendant’s way out to Limbang.
