THE Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through the Brunei Islamic Religious Council has rendered assistance to the underprivileged with the distribution of $2,375,900 in Zakat funds to 1,442 heads of families and 4,231 children (dependants) to lessen their burdens especially in purchasing essential items for the new school term in January.
The children will receive $400 each to buy school necessities such as shoes, attires and books. This is an annual distribution organised by the Brunei Islamic Religious Council. The Zakat funds will be deposited into the recipients’ accounts while some will be distributed in cash.
Eleven families from Tutong and Belait also received the Zakat from Awg Hj Abdul Wahab bin Hj Sapar, Acting Secretary of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council during a distribution ceremony at the Multipurpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque in Tutong.
The total amount of Zakat funds distributed was $12,400.
“For the purpose of education, the council has distributed $65 a month for each student and $400 each for initial schooling needs during the new term through the Zakat funds. The money should be used wisely to secure the educational needs of children and hope they will succeed and improve their livelihood in the future,” he said.
One of the recipients from the Belait District, Hjh Mariana binti Hj Md Yassin, expressed her joy and gratitude after receiving the Zakat. “The money will be entirely used for my son, Md Armand Affendy bin Abdullah’s schooling needs for next year.”
