SOME 170 people participated in a beach clean-up co-organised by the Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Company Sdn Bhd, Brunei LNG, Brunei Shell Marketing (BSM), Brunei Shell Tankers (BST) and Brunei Gas Carriers (BGC) as a part of the celebration of 85 years of Shell in Brunei at the Billionth Barrel Monument in Seria yesterday.
The event coincided with the International Coastal Cleanup 2014 (ICC 2014), a worldwide event initiated by Ocean Conservancy in 1986 to encourage citizens to remove rubbish and debris from beaches and waterways all around the world, identify the sources of the rubbish and change behavioural patterns that contribute to pollution.
Themed “Turning the Tide on Trash”, the clean-up was participated by staff from BSP, BSM, BST and BGC as well as volunteers from schools in Seria and Kuala Belait, members from the local community, business partners, youths from several associations and staff from the Department of Youth and Sports of the Belait District.
Rebecca B K Sekhon 15, and Sarah Koh 16, both Year 10 students at St Margaret’s School in Seria, said they had volunteered for the event because they want to help the community to keep the environment free of rubbish. “We are happy to have collected so much rubbish and now the beach looks cleaner,” Sarah said.
Volunteers from Germanischer Lloyd Offshore & Industrial Services (B) Sdn Bhd of Seria, Bryan Ang Chong Wei and Liew Thien Choi were also interviewed by the Bulletin. “All the rubbish we collected was weighed to see how much we have collected,” Thien Choi said.
The Seria team led by Hj Mohd Idris bin Hj Mohd Jaafar, the Head of Health, Safety, Security and Environment of BSP collected about 330 kg of garbage.
The clean-up was also held along Lumut Beach in Belait District and Jerudong Beach in Brunei-Muara District.
A total of 143 people went to Lumut Beach for the clean-up led by Mohamad bin Hj Damit, the Managing Director of Brunei LNG. They collected about 461.65 kg of rubbish.
A total of 210 volunteers cleaned up Jerudong Beach and collected about 700 kg of rubbish. They were led by Pg Shamhary bin Pg Dato Hj Mustapha, the Managing Director of BSM who was accompanied by Hj Azhar Hj Yahya the Commercial Director of BSP.
