WITH the customary kick of a football to the back of the net, which it must be add, sail past the keeper, amid a fanfare of committee members, supporters and teams alike, the His Majesty 68th Birthday Futsal Cup was declared open at the Indoor Stadium last night.
Taking the honour to officiate the opening ceremony was Awang Mohammad Sunardi bin Haji Buntar, Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer as the guest-of-honour.
Haji Abu Bakar bin Mansor, Penghulu of Mukim Lumapas gave welcoming remarks in his capacity as the chairperson of the championships.
The objectives among others are to encourage the community to enliven the birthday celebrations of His Majesty through the medium of sport, provide encouragement and avenue to the community to be involved in an active lifestyle in sport as so to enhance prosperity and health and introducing the game of futsal in the form of its standard management and refereeing.
Like in many other big competitions nationwide, the players will be given exposure and could serve as a platform for selection in the national youth teams which include being nurtured and trained further in long- term sporting programmes set-ups.
The competition is open to all four districts including villages, mukims, ministries, government departments, universities, colleges, secondary schools, private sector, youth organisations and clubs.
