THE Lufbru Summer Games is an annual sporting event first held in 2007. Organised by one of the biggest Bruneian student societies in the United Kingdom, LufBru members consists of Bruneian students studying in Loughborough, United Kingdom.
This year the Games was held on August 29-31 at Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Sekolah Sukan, marking the event’s 8th anniversary.
The sports competed followed the tradition of the Games every year, which are netball, futsal and badminton. The three-day event attracted more than 260 players, consisting of Bruneian students studying in higher education institutions across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Sponsors that played a significant part in making this year’s LufBru Summer Games a success included Sinohydro Pahaytc, Brunei Shell Petroleum, Superwater Marketing and Rainfresh as the platinum sponsors. Silver sponsors were Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd, Eco Bumi Arkitek, MOC Sdn Bhd and Jurutera Tempatan. Loughborough University, Perunding Primaneka, Seri Bumi Consultants and CJ Technical Services Sdn Bhd served as the event’s bronze sponsors who were also supported by the Ministry of Education and Brunei Students Unit in the United Kingdom.
Present to officiate the opening ceremony of the Games was guest of honour Cikgu Haji Ibrahim Haji Bagol, Acting Head of Scholarship Section at Ministry of Education.
On the first day of the Games, Fuze 10 emerged as champions in the netball tournament, beating eight other teams after a day of gruelling round robin system of matches. Cardiff Dragons were the first runner-up and Valkyries the second runner-up.
A total of 14 teams competed for the title of futsal champion on the second day of the Games.
‘Beware of Suarez’ was crowned champion of the futsal tournament after defeating the runner-up DSP in the final. ‘Final Strike’ emerged as the second runner-up.
Guest of honour, Haji Mohd Jaafar bin Haji Bakar, West Manager of Brunei Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd, watched the final at Universiti Brunei Darussalam Sports Complex.
The last day of the Games hosted the much-awaited badminton tournament at Sekolah Sukan in Berakas.
Champion of the men’s singles was Zulwafi Suhaili, who beat Deddy Ezwandy Anak Antah. The second runner-up was Pg Hj Md Saiful Redzuan.
In the women’s singles, the champion was Nur Masyirah binti Haji Masri, followed by Mayang Sari Indah Yusof and Nur Azmina binti Md Nurduwin as the runner-up and second runner-up respectively.
The champion of the men’s doubles was LufBru, followed closely by runner-up BruLeeds.
The second runner-up for the men’s doubles was team Ayam.
In the women’s doubles, Effie and Natalie rose to the top as champions, beating Ab and Amalia.
Second runner-up was Flying Gravity.
The mixed doubles saw Alimin and Amalia emerge as champions after a triumphant match against runner-up Katok-Ians.
Second runner-up was won by BruSheff.
The guest of honour was Ann Chieng, a representative from one of the main platinum sponsors, Sinohydro Pahaytc.
The LufBru Summer Games is organised annually to foster closer ties among students back home in Brunei from the United Kingdom for the summer holidays.
