A STUDENT from the Seri Begawan Reli-gious Teachers University College (KUPU SB) has made the Sultanate proud after winning the 15th International Tilawah Al-Quran Competition in Moscow, Russia.
Mohammad bin Ali came first in the Ti-lawah Al-Quran category, beating 17 other participants from countries like Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey and Iran. He received a US$5,000 cash prize, a US$1,000 gift from Russian Mufti Sa’ad Al-Ghamdi, a trophy and a certificate of participation.
The Brunei delegation, led by Acting Senior Religious Officer Hj Haslin bin Hj Mohd Noor, left for the competition in Moscow on September 15.
Welcoming the delegates at the airport were Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad bin Pg Hj Abdul Rahman, the Minister of Religious Affairs; Victor A Seleznez, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Brunei Darussalam; Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Hj Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), as well as other senior officials from MoRA and KUPU SB.
A thanksgiving prayer ceremony was also held at the Qari champion’s residence in Kg Belimbing, which was attended by the minister as well as village head YB Awg Hj Gapor @ Hj Md Daud bin Karim, who is also a member of the Legislative Council (LegCo).
The ceremony was enlivened by a Dikir Marhaban and the thanksgiving prayer was recited by Mosque Affairs Officer Hj Mohd Hanafi bin Hj Zaini.
In an interview with the Bulletin, Mo-hammad bin Ali shared, “This marks the fourth time that I have participated in in-ternational competitions…
“Previously, I only managed to get third place in similar competitions in Malaysia and Indonesia and only received consola-tion prizes in Iran.”
