A LOCAL man who stole a car and caused an accident whilst fleeing the scene was sentenced by the Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday to jail for two years and four months, following his guilty pleas towards the charges.
Awangku Abd Rahman bin Pengiran Mahali pleaded guilty to a count of auto theft, driving without a valid licence, driving without being covered by motor vehicle insurance and third party risks as well as dangerous driving.
Chief magistrate Muhammed Faisal Pehin Datu Juragan Laila Diraja Dato Seri Paduka Awang Kefli made a further order for the defendant to compensate the stolen car’s owner a sum of $4,615 within two months from yesterday, or face a further four months’ jail.
Also, the defendant is barred from getting a driver’s licence for 12 months.
DPP Ratno Eddy Sophian Haji Zaidi revealed that the defendant was arrested by police who gave chase to the defendant after he stole a Proton Savvy car at about 3pm on January 13 from the car park at Hua Ho Tanjung Bunut.
The chase came to a halt when the defendant got into an accident at Jalan Paya Bunga Merah, Kg Mulaut, causing damages to the stolen car.
