A LOCAL man was sentenced to 20 months in jail and two strokes of cane by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for stealing and damaging cables belonging to Telekom Brunei Berhad.
Harzeb bin Haji Rahman, 30, pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing an eight-metre-long copper cable on a wooden walkway at Kg Sungai Panga in Kampong Ayer some time in July as well as causing damage to the earthing cables.
The defendant also pleaded guilty to stealing a 10-metre-long copper cable on a wooden walkway at Kg Saba Tengah, Kampong Ayer, some time in April.
DPP Danial Kifrawi informed Magistrate Hajah Ervy Rahman that the defendant went to both locations with a friend and cut the cables using a handsaw. He then sold the stolen copper cables to an Indian man for a sum which was used for his personal expenses.
