A LOCAL man was ordered to pay a fine of $11,400 or serve 38 month’s jail in default, by the Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty of failing to pay his maid’s wages for 38 months.
Awang Sahari bin Yanam pleaded guilty to 38 charges of failing to pay wages, totalling $7,113, to Satini Sanuddin, an Indonesian national.
Magistrate Azrimah Rahman gave the defendant three months to settle the fine.
The penalty for a similar offence on each charge carries a fine of $1,500 or six months’ jail in default.
Meanwhile, the Department of Labour at the Ministry of Home Affairs in a press statement reminded employees of their obligation to pay wages to their employees every month and to adhere to employment laws.
