CHUNG Hwa School Tutong has rubbished rumours that members of its lion dance troupe were involved in the recent rape of a Taiwanese teacher.
The school’s board of directors yesterday issued a statement condemning the accusations as baseless and urged the public not to spread unfounded rumours.
Rumours of the dance troupe’s involvement were being widely circulated on social media and WhatsApp.
The board added that although it was with regret the rape had transpired at the school, spreading rumours was not helping the situation.
The board also called on the local community to be understanding to the feelings of the victim, who is currently recuperating after suffering injuries in the incident.
The police recently said the suspect, who was arrested within 24 hours of the incident, was a 22-year-old local who has a criminal record in a number of cases.
Goods, which were reported stolen during the incident, have also been recovered.
It is also learnt that the suspect, who has been charged and will appear in court again on Oct 28, has no link to the troupe.
