THE KUPU SB ‘A’ Team representing the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (KUPU SB) emerged champions in the second Regional Islamic Education Debate competition (PENDEPIS) last night, after putting on the best overall performance during the competition’s finals held at the Dewan Raya of Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB) in the capital.
Coming in second and third places were KUPU SB ‘B’ Team and Team Institut Teknologi Brunei, respectively.
The guest of honour at the event was the Minister of Religious Affairs, Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, who prior to the final round of debates, noted the importance of religious education in the present generation’s curriculum.
The Minister of Religious Affairs said, “Today’s generation are at risk of negative influences that may lead them astray from Islamic teachings. Therefore, Islamic Higher Institutions should collaborate in building strategic plans and programmes inclined towards preserving and maintaining the understanding as well as teachings of Islam.”
The competition, which began on Tuesday, aimed at enhancing students’ perspective on issues relating to Islamic education, while also providing the opportunity to bring forward arguments and relevant points pertaining to the topic.
During the finals, both teams defended their cases with passion by supporting their stance, while opposing the competitor’s position, winning the hearts of the audience and judges in the process.
The winners, KUPU SB ‘A’, went home with a $2,500 cash prize, a trophy and certificates of appreciation, that they received from the minister following the announcement by PENDEPIS judges.
Also present at the competition were the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) and their deputies, senior officers and staff as well as lecturers from KUPU SB.
