KUCHING (Bernama) – Kuching City police chief, ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad has advised the public not to take the law into their own hands when dealing with criminals.
He said under the law, the public could only make citizen arrests and to then call the police to take further action.
Roslan was commenting on the efforts taken by residents of Jalan Urat Mata in Tabuan Jaya, here, to set up a crime prevention committee, which he said had been effective in preventing crime in the housing estate.
He said there was zero crime case reported in the area last month despite being a crime hot spot in the past.
The committee has taken the initiative to install CCTVs and to buy walkie-talkies in their effort to prevent crime in their area.
They also keep an eye on any stranger and suspicious person entering the housing area and alert the other residents.
“When people enter our area, we ask them politely and when we see a suspicious character, we will immediately alert the police and at the same time we will jot down the vehicle plate number,” said Yeo Sung Kheng @ Ken, a member of the committee.
“We also sent out messages to our group WhatsApp to alert our members (other residents) of possible crime in the area.
“It is not that we have no more confidence in the police but we are just trying to assist the police, as we believe that crime prevention is everybody’s responsibility,” he said.
