KHEIR FC pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in recent history, recovering from three goals down to win 5-3 against Amaigido ‘A’ in an action-packed final and bagged the Awan Futsal Tournament title at the Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) Futsal Court on Sunday.
They were only denied of a sixth goal by the final whistle in a truly masterstroke of a performance in one of the classic finals ever witnessed in a local tournament.
It was not plain sailing nevertheless but if anything there was an indication that they were deploying an effective strategy that they executed to perfection.
Kheir never ceased threading the balls, probing the attack, locating team-mates and finding good areas to threaten the goal and this was evident despite being three goals down without figuring out what hit them.
They were beaten by a moment of sheer brilliance as Md Radi rocketed a thunderbolt into the bulging net which left their keeper absolutely no chance.
Kheir FC had a chance to reduce the arrears but on two notable occasions lacked accuracy in the business end. For a certain period of time, they would go on to rue their misses as Ak Dayat killed off a wonderful team-oriented goal.
Without necessarily shifting into gears, Amaigido ‘A’ went further ahead as the advancing Azim Zainal outmuscled defenders before drilling home a fine finish from an acute angle.
Kheir FC finally found their break where due with a brilliant curling finish from Ak Hilme to hand them a lifeline they richly deserved after a series of promising attacks.
They doubled their lead before Tamimi’s long-range effort trickled into the back of the net with the keeper nearly shutting the effort out.
Zulhilmi added a brace in quick succession finishing his team’s fifth with aplomb much to the disbelief of the supporters of the reality that unfolded on a damp night at ITB.
Kheir FC duly tightened the loose ends at the back and restricted their deflated opponents to a sight in goal and fantastically held up their back-line.
By the time Tamimi had popped up a cracker of a strike with his final goal of the evening, Kheir were ruthlessly ripped apart to devastating effect.
Their keeper, who conceded five in as many minutes, tried to take down an entire Kheir team perfectly placed for victory by rampaging forward high up the pitch.
Their team-mates alone could not advise the keeper to return to his box leaving an elevated responsibility in defence.
Awan Futsal Tournament was an initiative set up by Awan Event Planning and Services, a management company which was formed as part of the Incubation Discovery Year in UBD encouraging students to grow and develop their entrepreneurial skills.
The competition attracted a total of 14 teams which were played all day on Friday and Sunday.
Initially there were 23 teams which were due to compete but a number of teams pulled out over the public holiday period.
These teams were divided into four groups including two groups of three teams and two groups of four teams. Syahkampong cemented third spot after winning a comeback of their own after recovering from two goals down to win 3-2.
