THE launching of the 31 Times Khatam Al-Quran ceremony in conjunction with the upcoming 31st National Day celebration was held yesterday at the Suri Seri Begawan Raja Pengiran Anak Damit Mosque in Kampong Manggis/Madang.
The guest of honours were the Minister of Communications, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar and Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Datin Paduka Hajah Adina binti Othman.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by a mass recitation of verses from Al-Quran by some 930 participants, which was led by religious teachers from the Ministry of Religious Affair’s Islamic Studies Department and graduates of the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan.
Those in attendance included participants of the Musabaqah Tilawatil Al-Quran Youth Competition 2014, students from secondary schools and higher education institutions, youth associations, current and former members of the National Service Programme, members of the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Programme and ‘Belia Cinta Tanah Air’, as well as representatives from government and private agencies.
The objectives of the event was to enhance the understanding and appreciation of Al-Quran among the youth as well as enlivening the National Day celebration.
It also aimed to encourage youth to become more involved in religious activities.
Also in attendance were the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications, officials and staff of both ministries.
