A GROUP of four 3rd year students of PAPRSB Institute of Health Science (IHS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), in collaboration with the Kampong Kapok Consultative Council (MPK Kapok), yesterday organised a Diabetes Awareness Campaign at the residence of the village head of Kampong Kapok, Haji Marali bin Ahmad.
The four students – Afifah Amirah Hakimah Hj Shazli, Azirah Abdul Wahab, Muhd Adib Aiman Hj Abdul Rahman and Tan Shi Ying – have undertaken their own initiatives to raise and spread the awareness on diabetes, which is known to be the third leading cause of death.
During the campaign, free health screenings for Body Mass index (BMI), blood pressure and blood glucose were conducted for the Kampong Kapok community. Muhd Adib Aiman, one of the organisers, also gave a talk and facilitated discussions to address the issues and misconceptions relating to diabetes. A nursing instructor from the Ministry of Health, Haji Zamri bin Jamil was also present to answer questions.
A Zumba session led by Fatimah Arni Hj Md Daud and Zainatul Ashiqin Hj Salled from IHS was also held for the villagers.
In addition, a cooking competition was organised together with Hers Kitchen Cooking Class to raise awareness on healthy eating. Ten 10 groups of contestants participated in the event.
Judges included two chefs from Hers Kitchen Cooking Class – Mr Wong Lai Huat (Community Nutrition Division, MOH) and Dr Tayyab Hassan (IHS, UBD).
The guest of honour was Dr Haji Abdul Hamid bin Musa, the Advisor to the Kampong Kapok Consultative Council.
