BUKIT KAYU HITAM (Bernama) – The Kedah Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) foiled an attempt to smuggle out a stolen Mercedes Benz CLA 200 at a road-block at KM 1.3 of the North-South Expressway (Plus) heading to Thailand on Tuesday night.
Kedah UPP Commander, Abd Latif Abd Rahman said that in the incident at about 8.15pm, his men detained a man in his 30’s who originated from Georgetown, who was paid to take the car to a hotel in Danok, Thailand.
Upon investigation, he said, the suspect was found to have taken the luxury car worth RM500,000 from a friend in Changlun at 7.30pm last night and to smuggle it out to a neighbouring country for a fee of RM300.
He said that upon further investigation, the gray-coloured luxury car with a false registration number was reported lost on Jan 8 in Puchong.
“The suspect also showed an authority card from the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), which was false, to the UPP in order to free himself from the road block,” Abd Latif told a media conference at the Bukit Kayu Hitam UPP Complex yesterday.
He said further investigation revealed that the suspect had previously taken out more than 50 stolen cars from around the Klang Valley for smuggling to a neighbouring country throughout last year.
He said that the luxury car and the suspect had been handed over to the Kubang Pasu District Police Headquarters for further action and the case was being probed under Section 379A of the Penal Code for car theft.
Abd Latif said that throughout last year, his men foiled attempts to smuggle out nine luxury cars and a high-powered motorcycle worth RM1.1 million.
