TO SUPPORT the efforts by Kampong Sungai Matan Village Consultative Council to develop its tourism products and boost the economic activities, Tourism Development Department, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources yesterday handed over a cultural stage to the village.
Handing over the mock key to Mohammad Sunadi bin Haji Buntar, Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer, was Mariani binti Haji Sabtu, Acting Director of Tourism Development. The acting district officer then handed it over to the Village Head of Kampong Sungai Matan, Pengiran Haji Abd Rahman bin Pengiran Haji Zainal.
The project is a joint initiative by Tourism Development Department project and Public Works Department, Ministry of Development under the National Development Plan. The construction was completed in September 2014. Among the facilities at the stage are a changing room, toilet and bathroom and a store.
According to a tourism official, the cultural stage would help develop and promote the village’s tourism products.
Among the tourism activities at Kampong Sungai Matan are visits to floating fish cage, cultural performances by village youth, catching fish using traditional methods such as nets and ‘Bintur’, participating in village daily activities such as processing prawn, dry fish, making prawn crackers and traditional delicacies.
Other activities include making handicraft using recycled materials, Brunei River cruise, jungle trekking at Bukit Matan, homestay and visits to the nearby mangrove forest.
Kampong Sungai Matan is one of the villages in Brunei-Muara District that has many popular tourist attractions. Last year, the village received more than 7,000 tourists from Asean and countries such as Australia, Japan and Germany.
Members of Kampong Sungai Matan Village Consultative Council yesterday expressed their gratitude to the Tourism Development Department and Public Works Department. They said before the stage was built, most village activities and products were showcased at the village head’s residence.
Also present at the event were the Village Head of Kampong Belimbing and Legislative Council member, YB Haji Gapor @ Haji Mohd Daud bin Karim as well as officers from Tourism Development Department and Brunei-Muara District Office and travel agents.
