AN ELECTION ceremony for the new Village Head of Kampong Madang, Mukim Berakas ‘B’ was held yesterday at the Suri Seri Begawan Raja Pengiran Anak Damit Mosque in Kampong Manggis/Madang.
Present to witness the election was Mohammad Sunadi bin Haji Buntar, Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer.
In his speech, Mohammad Sunadi said that village heads are considered as the “eyes, ears, mouth, feet and hands” of the government, an intermediary for the community as well as becoming the “voice” of the community if any concerns are to be raised.
According to him, a village head is also responsible in maintaining mutual understanding, unity and harmony among the villagers and at the same time, to encourage community work and cooperation for the benefit of the village.
Villagers casted their votes at the voting stations where two separate ballet boxes were set up for the two candidates.
The first candidate was Awang Haji Emran bin Haji Ismail, 59, who served as the Senior Medical Records Officer at the Ministry of Health. His nomination was proposed by Awang Haji Jumat bin Amau and was supported by Awang Haji Kula Mantal as first supporter and Hj Puasa bin Haji Ali as second supporter.
The second candidate was Awang Haji Ismail bin Haji Awang Mohammad, 43, who served at the Sultan’s Flight.
His nomination was proposed by Awang Haji Mohd Rafie bin Hj Yusof and was supported by Pg Shari Pg Hj Mohamad as his first supporter and Ahmad Kasranuddin bin Haji Abdul Wahid as his second supporter.
The voting session ended at 3pm. There were 292 eligible voters in the village and it was announced that Awang Haji Emran won the election with 210 votes.
Awang Haji Emran’s win will be forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs for further processing.
Also in attendance during the ceremony were Awang Misle bin Haji Abd Karim, Assistant Brunei-Muara District Officer; Pengiran Haji Ali bin Pengiran Maon, Penghulu Mukim of Berakas ‘B’; Penghulus and village heads; as well as senior officials and staff of the Brunei-Muara District Office and also residents of Kampong Madang, Mukim Berakas ‘B’.
