JOHOR BAHARU (Bernama) – Police have confirmed that they seized a book and 30 copies of it, which contained the word, ‘Allah’, from a bookstore at Tangkak, Ledang on Dec 5.
Johor Police Contingent Headquarters CID chief SAC Datuk Hasnan Hassan said the police were acting on a report lodged on a book titled, “Mari Kita Memuji Allah Kita”.
“A catholic priest and a church follower were brought to the Ledang district police headquarters to have their statements recorded,” he said in a statement here yesterday.
He said the books had the sign of a cross on the cover.
Hasnan added that the investigation paper on the case had been referred to the deputy public prosecutor’s office for further action.
Meanwhile, a news portal reported yesterday that Rev Cyril Mannayagam, 44, had sent the book to the bookstore at 1pm for reprinting.
The report said the priest was detained four hours later, when he went to claim the book and the copies, which police seized.
Cyril who is based at St Andrew’s Church in Muar, was released after giving his statement. He later explained that the books were for 100 Orang Asli Catholics in Bekok, Tangkak, whom he had also been serving as parish priest for four years.
