IN CONJUNCTION with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Datin Paduka Hajah Adina binti Othman, officially launched the Family Poverty Eradication Workshop at the Community Hall II of Kampong Lambak Kanan.
The workshop, organised by the Community Development Department (JAPEM), was aimed at raising awareness and providing exposure, knowledge and skills to members of the public in enhancing the quality of life through various initiatives towards generating economic development.
This year’s celebration carries the theme, ‘Generating Family Economy’ (Menjana Ekonomi Keluarga), highlighting that a stable family economy is one of the fundamentals for determining the welfare and happiness of a family. By securing economy, the family will be able to shape a better lifestyle.
The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by a welcoming remark by the Acting Director of Community Development, Dayang Rostinah binti Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Pahlawan Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Tahir, in her capacity as the chairman of the workshop.
The event continued with a speech by the guest of honour and launching of the workshop.
The guest of honour was later invited to tour the booths and mini exhibitions.
Throughout the workshop, the participants were guided by invited trainers and successful entrepreneurs who gave lessons covering several areas including cuisine, folding sinjang and headgear making or ‘Menambat Dastar’, as well as make-up and grooming and beading and embroidery.
Apart from the exposure to the fundamental practices in handling business which included financial management, operations and marketing, the participants also learnt the aspect of strengthening their own personality to be more courageous in handling business. They were also given tips on how to handle business.
The workshop was attended by more than 150 participants comprising clients of JAPEM, Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) and non-government organisations.
The event was also enlivened with exhibitions by the clients of JAPEM and individuals with the main purpose of promoting their products to the public.
Also in attendance during the launching ceremony were representatives from the Special Committee on Eradication of Poverty, heads of departments, directors and senior officials from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the departments under it.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was first introduced on October 17, 1993 and Brunei Darussalam began celebrating it in 2012.
