WITH reference to the letter ‘Wheel-chair bound awaiting response from JAPEM’ written by Handicapped and published in the Opinion page of the Weekend Bulletin, Nov 1, 2014, the Department of Community Development (JAPEM), Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports would like to clarify the issues brought up by Handicapped.
Firstly, the department has considered the application submitted by Handicapped dated March 1, 2012 and found that he was already receiving a Disability Allowance of $250 a month under the Old Age Pension and Disability Act 1954. Furthermore, since 2013 he is also receiving monetary assistance of $200 a month from the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB).
Handicapped’s request for additional assistance was reconsidered by the Monthly Welfare Assistance Assessment Committee on November 5, 2014, however, the application is still being reviewed.
On another note, officers from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports as well as JAPEM had visited Handicapped at his home on several occasions and following the visits and discussions with Handicapped as well as family members, several problems have been identified and the department is working to assist the applicant.
The Department of Community Development would like to inform the public that it takes the issue of welfare seriously and works hard to ensure that assistance is rendered and given to the deserving. However, each application needs to be scrutinised by the respective committees to safeguard the interests of all parties and to ensure that good and satisfactory service is given to the intended group.
