Japan Ministry of Defence conducts Japan-Asean Ship Rider Cooperation Programme

THE Japan Ministry of Defence is conducting its first Japan-Asean Ship Rider Cooperation Programme on board the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force Ship IZUMO until June 23 in international waters surrounding the Republic of Singapore (aboard the JS IZUMO).

The programme is an initiative of Japan’s ‘Vientiane Vision’ which was announced by Japan during the Asean-Japan Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting in November 2016. Consistent with the guiding principles of the ‘Vientiane Vision’, the programme, inviting all Asean member states, will help contribute to regional stability by providing opportunities for participants to build mutual understanding and professional networks, enhance capabilities related to maritime security and share understanding of international maritime law.

The programme includes seminars on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and International Maritime Law, and opportunities to observe various training activities.

Participants of the programme include a military representative from each Asean member state and a representative from the Asean Secretariat.
