RACERS took to the slopes of Sayyidina Husain Secondary School as they vied to be champions of the second Free Wheel Go Kart School Challenge, yesterday.
Winning the Challenge Trophy was Team One of Sayyidina Husain Secondary School after defeating Team Two from the Mechanical Training Centre while Menglait Secondary School won third place.
The best design went to Team Two of Sayyidina Husain Secondary School. They also managed to break the previous record of champions, Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (Maktab Sains) with a time of 27 seconds.
The champion team, led by Cikgu Mohaiani bin Hj Mohamad, comprised Md Arif bin Reduan, Md Nazirul Azim bin Khalid and Haziq bin Abu Bakar. It took three months for them to assemble their ‘wheels’.

In an interview, Cikgu Mohaiani said, “The students have done well and I am proud of them. They conducted research online about the free wheel go kart then came up with the best design.” He expressed hopes to organise a national level Free Wheel Go Kart race in Brunei Darussalam that could help promote local tourism. Cikgu Mohaiani also recommended using the Mabohai road as it is the best location to organise such a competition.
Presenting the prizes to the winners was Hj Abdul Rahman bin Hj Nawi, Acting Director General of Education, Ministry of Education.
Cigku Zarina binti Hj Kadir, Principal of Sayyidina Husain Secondary School, in her speech touched upon the rationale of hosting such a race. “The competition has strengthened learning skills, which is part of SPN21 that comprises knowledge construction, real world problem solving and innovation, collaboration, skilled communication, use of ICT for learning, self regulation and Brunei global citizenship.” The next Free Wheel Go Kart School challenge will be held in 2016.
