GENEVA (dpa) – Israel criticised Switzerland on Friday over its decision to convene an international conference next week on the protection of civilians in the Palestinian territories.
Switzerland is the depository state for Geneva Conventions on the humanitarian conduct in conflicts, and its foreign ministry said it called the meeting of signatory states because the UN General Assembly recommended it to do so in 2009.
Israel said it would not take part in the conference on Wednesday in Geneva and accused Switzerland of “biased handling” of this issue.
“The conference of signatories is a political move whose sole purpose is to exploit the important stage of the Geneva Conventions for the sake of assailing Israel,” the Israeli embassy in Geneva said.
The United States has also made clear that it will not attend.
