INSTITUTE of Higher Learning (IPT) produced a dramatic second- half winner to finally end the resistance of a stubborn Brunei Shell Joint Venture (BSJV) side in Group ‘B’ in the futsal event of the Brunei Darussalam National Games (SKBD) at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex last night.
Brunei Shell Joint Venture (BSJV) were able to contend the overwhelming pressure and forcing errors but individual class took over and eventually won the game.
However, the Belait-based side could very well be the one holding the lead after the goalkeeper slid onto the turf and only stoic defending rescued IPT from falling behind.
IPT pretty much caressed the pitch seeking options and playing a man down the wide flanks meticulously positioned to engineer good chances for a team-mate to deliver a perfect finish.
BSJV looked solid without necessarily dominating possession and were pleased playing on the counter nearly as effective as their opponents.
Something got to give for these both sides though and IPT found the winner drilling a shot low and hard into the bottom corner and crashing into the back of the net.
Meanwhile, Belait District defeated Temburong District 7-4 in an 11-goal thriller at the opening Group ‘A’ round.
The two teams were locked three goals apiece in the first half but Belait upped their tempo after the break to clinch the win.
Six teams have been drawn in Group ‘A’ namely Temburong District, Belait District, Royal Brunei, Association of Banks, Brunei-Muara District and the Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council.
Meanwhile, there are five teams in Group ‘B’ namely Institute of Higher Learning, Brunei Shell Joint Venture, Combined Telecommunications Companies Team, Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council and Tutong District.
The official opening match will be the first semi-final between the Group ‘A’ winner and Group ‘B’ first runners-up on November 29. The second semi-final will also be held on the same day.
The losing semi-finalists will play for a third-place decider on Dec 1.
All 11 teams will be hoping to book a date in the final on Dec 2 for the SKBD futsal title.
