INSTITUTE of Higher Learning (IPT) were crowned 4th Deputy Minister of Education Cup 7-a-side Football Tournament champions after defeating Temburong 3-2 in the final with all goals coming in the first half at the Dato Mahawangsa Primary School in Lambak yesterday.
The referee had barely blown the whistle for kick-off when Faizul Jefry Hj Zaini exploited space and had the vision to unlock a rasping drive that snuck through Temburong’s goal.
The early advantage spurred IPT to launch an attack and Faizul Jefry struck again from close range in the second minute to put his side two to the good.
Both teams practised their skill in juggling a ball before Temburong hacked the ball away for a corner as IPT threatened a third.
Darius bin Yakub pulled one back in the 6th minute and engineered a role as his team’s influential technician to recover from two goals down.
The thing about 7-a-side football is a kick on the touch-line constitutes a throw-in and applies within the rules of the game.
With the Temburong players sensing an opening, a cross found Ibrahim bin Haji Nudin who got marginal but effective contact off the ball, which ended in the back of the net.
IPT’s goalkeeper Demigo Kapal exhibited his distribution skills after lifting a ball into Pg Sazali Pg Hj Idris and after turning his back against the goal, the striker finished with precision to retake the lead.
Ibrahim received a pass but Demigo made a huge presence and commanded the goal under his supervision.
Darius showed fancy footwork but the defence were able to nullify the threat.
Mohamad Fadhillah bin Md Azri nearly made an immediate impact from the bench after forcing a wonderful save by Temburong’s Ahmad Yani bin Hj Abdul Ghani with the player emulating a Cristiano Ronaldo-esque free- kick.
Meanwhile, Islamic Education Department (JPI) claimed third spot after edging Brunei 2A 1-0.
IPT also enjoyed a clean sweep in the individual awards as both Demigo Kapal and Faizul Jefry scooped accolades, the latter of whom earning the top scorer award with eight goals to his credit.
The guest-of-honour, Acting Minister of Education, Dato Seri Setia Haji Yusoff bin Hj Ismail presented medals and trophies to the winners.
