INFORMATION Department portrays as the eye, ear and tongue of the government as it aims to inculcate a culture of ‘Informed Society’.
This was stated by the Acting Director of Information, Mawardi bin Haji Mohammad, during the ‘Informed Society’ programme organised by the department for the Tutong District community.
Speakers from various government agencies were invited for the programme to discuss on topics related to entrepreneurship and abuse issues.
He said the information rendered is beneficial and applicable to any related matters of life especially on entrepreneurship and issues of abuses.
On the second day, visits to Restaurant Soto Rindu in Kampong Katimahar and to Zainal Agriculture Farm in Kampong Masin aim to expose the participants to local businesses and projects. These visits also hope to inspire and motivate the participants.
The programme, which was successfully held in other districts, attracted participations from various age groups. It provided opportunities to the participants to learn more about entrepreneurship and to help tackle abuse issues.
Mawardi said the society should encourage local youth to participate in business which will help reduce the level of unemployment in the country. In 2011, statistics by the Department of Economic Planning and Development showed that there were 5,300 unemployed individuals in the country.
The programme also called for people to keep their eyes open for any probable abuse cases and to take actions.
According to statistics in the end of 2012, there was a 35 per cent increase in investigation related to rape, and an increase of more than double in investigations related to underage sex. Child abuse cases were 35 per cent higher in 2012 than the previous year.
Mawardi believed that it is a shared responsibility to make the programme as a premier platform to build a connecting bridge between the Information Department and the society. With cooperation from the participants, the programme will be further continued and enhanced from time to time.
