AN INDONESIAN man was sentenced for various offences at the Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday. These include a fine of $7,450 or serve seven months’ jail in default; and three months imprisonment with three strokes of the cane for possessing smuggled cigarettes and road traffic offences, yesterday.
Magistrate Azrimah Rahman heard that 48-year-old Nur Maarif got into an accident after a police pursuit at about 2.40am on December 16. The pursuit began when the defendant was seen driving hastily in his white Toyota Corolla into Simpang Pandan 4 while police were conducting their rounds at a junction in Jalan Maulana.
The police then gave chase to the defendant, which finally ended when the defendant crashed his car into a “Hospital Suri Seri Begawan” signpost.
Police approached the defendant and found 16 cartons of cigarettes in the defendant’s car. On the first count, he pleaded guilty to possessing 16 cartons of smuggled cigarettes. The second count is for overstaying in the country after the expiry of his special pass on February 14, 2014. The third count was for driving without due care and causing damages to the signpost.
The fourth count is for driving a vehicle without an insurance policy while the fifth count is for driving the vehicle without a motor vehicle licence and lastly, for driving the vehicle with an expired driver’s licence as the sixth count.
